Fittingly, I thought the first blog on this site should not about why you should have a blog, but how easy it can be to run a simple blog. However, before going into how to write a blog, there are a few reasons that should be gone over as to why to write a blog. Even if you don’t have that much time or a budget to pay someone else to do it, a blog is vital to the longevity of your business. What are those?

Firstly, you’re here. That’s right, writing a blog helps you to connect with those that are interested in what you are selling. In my case, I want to sell content creation and marketing consultations. Writing a blog about those not only shows I have the skills to take on your job, but it also allows me to connect with you. Other reasons include improving your search ranking on Google and keeping your past clients apprised of new and changing information both in your business and the industry. What if, though, you don’t see how it could be useful to your particular business or field.

What good will it do me?

If you are in photography, an online portfolio is a no-brainer. On the other hand, have you thought about adding a blog? Writing about your work would showcase your technical understanding of photography as well as your personality. It would also boost your SEO through the use of relevant keywords. Lastly, it would allow clients to understand how you work on more than a photographic level, it would let them know how you think. In all, there are many things that a professional blog can do for you regardless of the industry.

What if I’m not in any sort of job that needs writing?

Even if you are an engineering student, you should have an online portfolio. It shows that you are staying ahead of technology and lets recruiters see more than a sheet of paper. If you want to show them that you are more than your peers, you can also write. Make posts about the top ten tips for the project organization. Write about new changes in technology or engineering and how it’ll affect the industry your in. No matter what your industry, blog writing for both your small business or your portfolio is a smart idea on many fronts.

The Only Four Steps You Need to Start Writing a Blog:

Understand the Basics

When starting a blog, you need to make sure that you understand a few things first. You need to understand the platform, the topic, and the best practices when writing about your particular field. These are actually the same reasons that people will pay for content creation.

For example, if you are writing about cooking food, you should have all the knowledge on how to cook. However, you will need to learn to effectively use WordPress, create SEO optimized content, and how to style your content to what your readers will like. If you don’t do these things, your content might not be visible on Google. If people find it, they might have a hard time reading it or finding what they are looking for.

Decide on a Frequency

With the hard work out of the way, the next thing you need to decide when you are creating a blog is how often you are going to post. If you are running a blog yourself or have a small start-up it’s okay if you don’t post a blog each day. However, if you decided to stick to every other Monday (like I do on here) or every day then you need to stick to it without fail. This is important because it will help keep your readers interested and expecting your work. It will also show Google that you are a consistently updated website, a good thing for SEO and ranking.

Read About Your Subject

Perhaps the most important blogging tip is how much you read. Not just your favorite books, but about others that are doing the same thing as you. When you first joined the working world, you worked under someone to learn how they did things. They taught you what would be best and what didn’t work at all. As you worked with more and more people, you learned what would actually work for you and what you didn’t prefer. Eventually, you had enough knowledge to start your own business. The same thing can be said about blogging. By reading what others are posting, you will be able to see what is working for your competitors and what isn’t. This will give you the ability to improve not only your writing skills but also your company overall.

Just Start Writing

If you are doing all the work yourself, the most important thing you can do is write. While it is vital to learn as much as you can, it’s also important to just start writing. No matter how much you watch videos about how to workout and read fitness plans, you will never see if it actually works until you go and workout. Likewise, you will never improve and get in better shape unless you start practicing. At the end of the day, content writing works much the same. The more you write, the better you will be.

Writing a blog can be as easy as you want it to be. It’s also something that you should be doing already if you own a business. Do some research and decide what your theme will be. Look into how often you will post, read about others doing the same. Finally, get out there and post, nothing will change until you do.
